Here’s What You Need to Know About Skin Prep for Makeup

When it comes to flawless makeup application, what happens before you even touch your foundation or concealer is just as crucial as the makeup itself. We call this skin preparation, or skin prep in short.

Even if you’ve found the perfect foundation or the best kits, without the right skin prep, it won't look as great as it could. Heck, you’d be at risk of uneven skin tone and coverage, not to mention the unease feeling of flakiness. Trust us, we’ve been there before when we were still experimenting as teens.

To help you achieve a beautiful and long-lasting makeup look, we decided to hear from the expert: makeup artist. MUAs know the ins and outs of proper skin prep because it’s the secret behind a smooth, long-lasting, radiant makeup look — from birthdays to weddings, and even in simple gatherings.

The Importance of Skin Prep Before Applying Makeup

Q: How important is skin prep before applying makeup? Are there any specific skincare steps you recommend taking before a makeup session?

Marc Pajerlan: Skin prep is absolutely essential before applying makeup! Think of it as creating a smooth canvas. Proper skin prep ensures that your makeup goes on evenly and lasts longer. Marc said, "I always recommend starting with a clean face, using a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type. After cleansing, follow up with a toner to balance your skin's pH. Then, apply a good moisturizer to hydrate your skin. If you have time, a primer can also be beneficial to blur imperfections and help your makeup adhere better."

Pro Tip: If you’re concerned about a white cast or greasy residue, look for sunscreens that are specifically designed for the face and have a lightweight, non-greasy formula.

Q: What are your tips for removing makeup without disrupting the skin's natural balance or causing irritation?

Marc Pajerlan: Removing makeup gently is key to maintaining healthy skin. Marc mentioned, "I recommend using a makeup remover that's suitable for your skin type. Micellar water is fantastic for most people because it's gentle yet effective. If you're wearing heavy or waterproof makeup, an oil-based cleanser can break it down without harsh rubbing. After removing your makeup, follow up with a mild facial cleanser to ensure all residue is gone. Finally, apply a soothing toner and a hydrating moisturizer to keep your skin balanced."

On Maintaining Healthy Skin

Q: Since makeup can sometimes clog pores, do you have any advice on how to maintain healthy skin while still enjoying wearing makeup?

Marc Pajerlan: Absolutely! To keep your skin healthy while wearing makeup, start with a non-comedogenic (won't clog pores) foundation. "Always make sure to remove your makeup thoroughly before bed," he added. "Incorporate regular exfoliation into your routine to prevent dead skin buildup, but don’t overdo it—once or twice a week is usually enough. Also, make sure your makeup brushes and sponges are cleaned regularly to avoid bacteria buildup. Lastly, consider using a clay mask once a week to detoxify your pores."

Q: Are there any makeup ingredients you tend to avoid because they might disrupt the skin's microbiome?

Marc Pajerlan: Yes, certain ingredients can be problematic for the skin's microbiome. Marc mentioned, "I typically avoid products with high concentrations of alcohol, as they can be drying and disrupt the skin's natural balance. Parabens and sulfates are also on my list to avoid because they can irritate the skin. Instead, I look for makeup products with gentle, nourishing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and natural oils."

Q: Why does your skin need to be moisturized before applying makeup? What products do you recommend for moisturizing the skin?

Marc Pajerlan: Moisturizing before applying makeup is crucial because it ensures your skin is hydrated, which helps makeup to apply smoothly and look more natural. Hydrated skin also helps prevent makeup from settling into fine lines and looking cakey. "For moisturizers," Marc said, "I recommend looking for something lightweight and suitable for your skin type. For oily skin, a gel-based moisturizer works well, while dry skin benefits from a richer cream. Some great options are Cetaphil Daily Hydrating Lotion, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel, Clinique Moisture Surge, and Pure Culture Bulgarian Rose Glam Gold Satin Crème."

Pro Tip: Patch-test new products on a small area of your skin before applying them to your entire face to avoid adverse reactions.

Making a Skincare Regimen Perfect for Your Environment

Everyone’s skin is unique, and what works for one person might not work for another. Customize your skin prep routine based on your specific concerns and the climate you’re in. For example, in humid environments such as the Philippines and Southeast Asia, you might prefer lightweight, non-greasy products that could be too sticky, while in colder climates, richer, more hydrating formulations may be necessary.
